The idea of wa; reading space; the aesthetics of negative space — the hardest part of shodo; brush pressure. Ends by writing 和.
Session 3: Session 3 — The Way「道」
Why Japan has sado, kendo, kado and shodo; the Way as endless practice; artisan spirit; concentration. Ends by writing 道.
Session 4: Session 4 — Sincerity「誠」
Bushido; a culture of keeping promises; a brushstroke cannot lie; the beauty of the line. Ends by writing 誠.
Session 5: Session 5 — Dream「夢」
The meaning of writing your dream; the culture of writing wishes; calligraphy as a way to draw the future; creating your own work. Ends by writing 夢.
Session 6: Session 6 — Connection「結」
Ichi-go ichi-e; en (bonds); how Japanese people connect; full review. Ends by writing 結.
A six-session online calligraphy course held every other week over three months. Each 90-minute live session explores one character — 心 Heart, 和 Harmony, 道 The Way, 誠 Sincerity, 夢 Dream, 結 Connection — learning not just brush technique but the spirit behind each idea. Taught live in English. A starter kit (ink, brush, and paper from a traditional Suzuka ink maker) is included in the course price and ships to you before your first session. Completing all six sessions makes you eligible for an exclusive in-person experience in Japan.
